Thank you! Its my pleasure!
For the readers who don't know you yet, can you give us a brief introduction of yourself?
Hi, I'm Jeff Tubbs..I like candle lit dinners and long walks on the beach...oh wait hahaha.. No, but seriously... I'm a music producer and DJ. I've been making music for about 8 years and I have been djing for about 12 years or so. I live in Los Angeles and spend a lot of time in my studio making weird noises, tweaking knobs, the usual stuff for a music nerd. I have had music out on many labels like U&A, Instereo, Audacious, Interscope, Big Alliance, Big Fish, to name a few of them.
Logo Design Contest Conclusion
The logo design contest has come to an end last Saturday. I'm quite disappointed to announce that only three people have supplied a grand total of 6 submissions. Despite good efforts, the submitted logo's were not quite what we were looking for unfortunately.
Due to the lack of contenders, no winner was elected. I suppose 50 dollars worth of prizes is meager for a logo, but as you probably know Tjoonz.com is a spare-time project with no profits earned from our activities. 50 dollars really was the best we had to offer.
Sorry.

Downloading / Streaming Issues
Update 01/17: It appears that the X-SendFile method is successfully implemented. Enjoy your bass fix!
On New Year's Eve we launched the new webdesign for Tjoonz.com. With this we introduced a new streaming player, utilizing HTML5 (with a fallback to Flash) and a script that serves our files. This script is based on PHP methods to transfer the file. We have run into some issues where our host terminates this script for one of two reasons:
- The script is running for too long (there is a time limit on how long a script may run before being terminated by their process watchers).
- The maximum allowed memory for PHP scripts is exceeded (there is a limit to how much memory a script may consume before being terminated by their process watchers).
We have looked into alternatives of serving files. We have confirmed that our host has installed a module called X-SendFile, which is a good way of sending large files initiated by PHP. Instead of fully serving the file via PHP, it now only sends a command to the webserver to start sending a file, after which the PHP script is done. The webserver then fully takes over the handling and sending of the requested file. This should solve any problem you will have downloading or streaming long mixes on the site.
However, we are not yet done with implementing the X-SendFile method, as it appears it doesn't fully work as currently configured. We've created a support ticket with our host and we hope to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience and we're sorry for any bass fix inconvenience this may have caused.
Stay Tjooned!
Site Lockdown
In preparation of the design update, the following steps are taken on www.Tjoonz.com to allow for a smooth migration of the platform:
- The design update is planned to take place between December 27th and 31st, going live to the public on New Years Eve.
- During the planned maintenance, Tjoonz.com will remain accessible for as long as possible. Downloading and Streaming features will still be available.
- No new uploads will be made during the maintenance period.
- Commenting will be disabled or ignored, meaning that any comments placed during the planned maintenance will not be visible in the new design. All comments from before December 27th 2011 will be kept in our database and used in the new design.
- The contributions module will be frozen to ensure the new site design reflects accurate sums of money.
- We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the update may cause.
Ask Number9 – What do DJ’s do live?
I was recently asked this:
So ive been going to a lot of Dubstep concerts lately and it seems like they just play a mix. I know that DJ's do some live mixing but do they mix the whole thing right there on the spot or what? Ive tried looking on google but it seems nobody knows. I figure they dont just make a mix like the ones here that are an hour long and all made and they just go up there and hit play
~ Tony Shultz
Well now, where do I begin with this one. I'm going to be pretty bold with my opening salvo and say that if you are infront of a crowd and you play a pre-recorded CD your no Dj! Your a human jukebox!! When it comes to mixing there is no right or wrong way of doing this and playing live is no different. Some people will use CDJ's, some people will use Decks, some people will use laptops and keyboards and in my opinion there is a lot of respect due for pushing your own way of making music. Ive grown up using decks but I have adapted to use Traktor with decks, without, with a keyboard, with a synth.... Whatever way works for me to put my creativity into what I do.
Now when it comes to playing live I can understand how daunting it can seem and how it would just be simpler to play a pre-recorded mix, but where is the fun in that. Mixing is a challenge and when you turn up to a gig and the equipment is new or unfamiliar and the PA may be off and the crowd are hostile if you get up there and play live then you are a Dj! You are embracing a challenge and you showing what you are made of.
I played a gig in bristol and followed on from a very popular local female Dj and when I started my first track a girl in the front row was leaning over the booth sticking her middle finger up in my face, swearing at me and generally being a complete menace. I didn't like it and for the first two tracks was thinking "what the fuck have I done here" then I looked past this girl and the entire room was going off, tops off, mosh pit madness behind her and I just laughed it off. It was distracting and if the whole room was doing that the easy option would have been to play a pre-recorded mix and fuck off to the bar for an hour. By the end of the set she was trying to get into the booth to chat me up. It was quite a night, I loved it as it was a challenge and I accepted it.
Now if I was at a club and I saw someone playing a pre-recorded mix I'd ask them why? Its quite disrespectful and arrogant instead of applying yourself and bringing something creative and new your just standing there taking acclaim and probably shouting the loudest "look at me I'm a Dj". To be honest my 89yr old Nan can press play on a CD player and is she a Dj?! Have some pride in what you do and embrace every challenge, don't look for the easy way out and earn your respect don't expect it.
I am Number9, that is all.
Tjoonz Design v6.0 Part 2: Comments and MoodGrid
Time for another update on the progress of the design. I've finished Single.php, now including the comment section and a nice sidebar. Avatars are bigger now, and the comment parts are slightly re-arranged. They're finished with a touch of drop shadow if your browser supports those.
I've also talked about new features in Part 1. One of them is a search filter cleverly *cough* dubbed 'The MoodGrid'. Using the MoodGrid, visitors are able to seek out mixtapes that suit a certain musical style and intensity. It helps differentiate between laid back Dubstep and Drumstep, between Minimal and Dutch House, etc. It's still in Beta, as we're not sure if the naming conventions are all correct, but so far it's looking good and it's up and running!
Here are some screenshots of the comments section and the header bar folded open, revealing the Grid underneath.
Tjoonz Design v6.0 Part 1
In the past few months I've been tinkering with a new design for Tjoonz. Progress has been sporadic, as I work on it in my spare-time. Shortly after I moved back to The Netherlands I met this sweet girl who - naturally - gets most of that spare-time. Uploads for Tjoonz have been slow and far in between as well, as I'm also still looking for a job and looking for places to live. Anyways, before I derail this blog post to be a Life Stream post, here's a little status update on the progress of the new design so far. Lets drop a screenshot first.
What you see is the frontpage. The footer isn't visible yet, which is good because it's not finished yet. Trust me it looks pretty crap right now. The fluffy stuff is just some filler content to get all the content loops filled. As you can see clearly here, News (blue) and Connect (green) have been replaced by House and Techno respectively. I quite like the Technoviking reference, but CK isn't fond of it, so it's probably going to be changed before v6.0 goes live.
While typing this I am still developing Single.php (the code which only shows a single mixtape on the screen, with cover art and tracklist etc.). I've finished implementing and styling the streaming player, which is no longer solely based on Flash for playback. This should eliminate the playback issues some users had before with our hotlink protection. It is also good news for mobile users, as the player makes use of HTML5 as well. iPhone users and such can now play back audio without the need of a Flash plugin.
I have many more planned features in the new design, but I'll save them for the next update post. Stay Tjooned people!
Heerlen Dance Event
Last week Marc and I went down to Heerlen, The Netherlands to attend the Heerlen Dance Event. The HDE is a humorous take on the Amsterdam Dance Event, and was organized more for producers, deejays and people in the party scene than it was for the general public. Though it was a public event, most people attending were indeed the aforementioned type of people. Marc and I met Nothing But Funk in person for the first time. He's a lot shorter than I thought... Funk, a.k.a. Bert Habets, is one of the dudes behind ICONS, another party thrown in Heerlen.
We also met the other organizer of HDE, and some of the deejays who played their house music that night. Tjoonz resident deejay Ralvino and his buddy Larry Larsson played back-to-back as Kunst & Kitsch, opening the first official HDE event. We talked to some deejays if they were interested in having their mixes promoted on Tjoonz.com, and they all seemed interested. Too bad our business cards aren't finished yet, as just giving them our email addresses didn't feel as satisfying as a card probably would. Hopefully they'll get in touch with us.
